Club History
1880 – 2002
From St Mark’s to Maine Road: a century in United’s shadow

Manchester City were founded in 1880 as St Mark’s Church of England, becoming Ardwick AFC in 1887 and finally Manchester City in 1894. The club spent much of the 20th century in the shadow of their neighbours: two First Division titles in 1937 and 1968, two FA Cups in 1904 and 1934, and a League Cup in 1970 represented their pre-Abramovich era highlights. The 1968 title, won under Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison with Colin Bell, Mike Summerbee and Francis Lee, remains the high watermark of the pre-Abu Dhabi era.

The decades that followed brought yo-yo relegations, financial turmoil and a farcical spell sharing Maine Road with United’s reserve teams in supporters’ nightmares. City were a club with a proud history and a devoted fanbase but without the resources to match their ambitions.

2002 – 2008
The move to Eastlands and the first signs of progress

City moved from Maine Road to the newly built City of Manchester Stadium in 2003, later renamed the Etihad. Kevin Keegan’s side brought genuine excitement, with Nicolas Anelka and Shaun Wright-Phillips catching the eye, but consistency remained elusive. Stuart Pearce briefly steadied the ship before Sven-Goran Eriksson’s arrival in 2007 brought star names including Elano, Vedran Corluka and Martin Petrov. The foundations were being laid, though nobody could have predicted what was coming next.

2008 – 2016
The Abu Dhabi takeover and the first title in 44 years

Sheikh Mansour’s takeover in September 2008 changed English football forever. Within hours of completion, Robinho arrived from Real Madrid for a British record fee. Roberto Mancini replaced Mark Hughes in 2009 and began building a squad capable of challenging for the title, bringing in Yaya Toure, David Silva, Sergio Aguero, Vincent Kompany and Joe Hart.

The 2011/12 season produced the most dramatic title finish in Premier League history. Needing to beat QPR on the final day to win the title on goal difference, City were losing 2-1 with five minutes remaining. Edin Dzeko equalised. Then, in the 94th minute, Sergio Aguero struck. The stadium erupted. Martin Tyler screamed. City were champions for the first time in 44 years.

2016 – present
Guardiola and the golden era

Pep Guardiola’s arrival from Bayern Munich in 2016 elevated City to a level of sustained excellence that English football had never seen. His first full season produced a record-breaking 100-point Premier League campaign in 2017/18. Six league titles in seven seasons followed, with City playing the most technically sophisticated football the division has produced.

The 2022/23 season delivered the ultimate prize: a historic Treble of Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League, the first English club to achieve the feat since United in 1999. Erling Haaland scored 52 goals in all competitions in his debut season. Rodri won the Ballon d’Or in 2023. Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden have been among the finest players of their generation in sky blue. City’s dominance of the Premier League era is statistically unmatched.
