Portugal’s kit history

Portugal’s red shirt has been worn by some of the most gifted footballers the game has ever produced — and for most of their history, the shirt carried talent without the trophies to match it. Eusébio in the 1960s, Figo at the turn of the millennium, Ronaldo for the last two decades — generation after generation of world-class players who made you believe, without quite delivering. Then came Paris, 10 July 2016. Eder, a substitute who had barely played in the tournament, drove a shot from 25 yards past Hugo Lloris in extra time. Portugal were European champions. The red shirt finally had its moment.

The shirt history of the Seleção is therefore a study in near-miss and eventual redemption. The 2004 European Championship at home, reaching the final only to lose to Greece — one of the greatest upsets in tournament history. The 2006 World Cup in Germany, where a 22-year-old Ronaldo announced himself to the world wearing #17. The 2010 and 2014 tournaments that promised much and delivered early exits. And then 2016 — the tournament Portugal barely scraped through the group stage of, only to win every knockout match, including the final, in a manner that defied all footballing logic. This guide covers the shirts worn through all of it.

From Figo’s #7 to Ronaldo’s many numbers and now Bruno Fernandes leading a new generation — Portugal’s retro shirt market has never been more active. Here’s everything you need to know.

1990s — Figo arrives and a golden generation takes shape
Euro 96 and the emergence of Portugal’s most talented generation

The 1990s were a decade of emergence for Portuguese football. A remarkable generation of players — Figo, Rui Costa, João Pinto, Vítor Baía — were coming through together, and their potential was becoming impossible to ignore. The 1995-96 home shirt, a match issue piece in classic Portugal red, was worn during the qualification campaign for Euro 96 in England and through the early stages of a generation that would define Portuguese football for the next two decades.

Euro 96 was Portugal’s first major tournament appearance since the 1986 World Cup — and they announced themselves emphatically, reaching the quarter-finals before losing to the Czech Republic. Figo was magnificent throughout, announcing himself as one of the finest players of his generation. The shirts from this era are rare — only eight 1990s Portugal shirts are currently available on Classic Football Shirts — which makes match issue pieces like the 1995-96 home shirt particularly significant finds for collectors. Stock is extremely limited and unlikely to be replenished.

2000s — Euro 2004 heartbreak and Ronaldo’s World Cup debut
Hosting Euro 2004, the Greece catastrophe and a 22-year-old Ronaldo announcing himself to the world

The 2000s were Portugal’s decade of near-misses — and their most significant shirts. The 2002-04 player issue home shirt with Figo #7 is the standout Portuguese collector’s piece of the era. Figo was at the absolute peak of his powers — winner of the Ballon d’Or in 2000, one of the best players in the world — and Portugal were building toward hosting the European Championship on home soil. The player issue quality of this shirt makes it among the most technically superior Portuguese shirts ever produced.

Euro 2004 produced one of the great tournament stories — but not the one Portugal wanted. Hosting the tournament, with Figo and Rui Costa in their prime years and a young Ronaldo emerging alongside them, Portugal reached the final only to lose 1-0 to Greece in Lisbon. Otto Rehhagel’s Greece, written off before the tournament began, had beaten the hosts in both the opening match and the final. The Portugal shirt from that tournament carries enormous emotional weight — the image of Figo weeping on the pitch after the final is one of the defining images of his career.

The 2006 World Cup in Germany brought a very different story. A 22-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo wearing #17 — not yet the global phenomenon he would become — played with a freedom and directness that announced him as something genuinely special. Portugal reached the semi-finals before losing to France, then beat England on penalties in the quarter-final in a match that featured Rooney’s red card and Ronaldo’s infamous wink. The 2006-08 shirt with C.Ronaldo #17 is one of the most historically significant Portuguese shirts of the decade.

2016-18 Portugal home shirt Ronaldo 7 — Euro 2016 winners
2010s — European champions at last
Euro 2016 — Eder’s extra-time winner and Portugal’s greatest ever achievement

The 2016-18 Portugal home shirt with Ronaldo #7 is the greatest Portuguese shirt ever made — because of what happened while it was being worn in Paris on 10 July 2016. Portugal had scraped through Euro 2016’s group stage with three draws. They had needed extra time to beat Croatia in the round of 16. Ronaldo had been carried off injured in the final’s first half, leaving the pitch in tears. And then, in the 109th minute, Eder — a substitute who had barely featured in the tournament — collected the ball 25 yards from goal, drove at the French defence, and struck a shot that flew past Lloris and into the net. Portugal were European champions. Their first and only major international trophy. The red shirt worn that night is the shirt every Portuguese fan wants.

The road to 2016 had been paved with frustration. The 2010 World Cup in South Africa saw Portugal reach the quarter-finals, where they were eliminated by eventual winners Spain — Ronaldo shut out by David Villa’s goal, the Portuguese attack unable to break through. The 2014 World Cup in Brazil brought a group-stage exit despite an extraordinary Ronaldo performance against Ghana. But none of that mattered after Paris. Ronaldo #7 on the 2016-18 shirt is the version every collector seeks — it is the shirt of Portugal’s golden night, worn by their greatest ever player in their greatest ever achievement.

2022-23 Portugal authentic home shirt Ronaldo 7
2020s — Ronaldo’s final chapter and a new generation rising
Qatar 2022, Ronaldo’s exit and Bruno’s Portugal take shape

The 2022-23 Portugal authentic home shirt with Ronaldo #7 is one of the most emotionally complex shirts in the country’s recent history. At the Qatar World Cup, Ronaldo was dropped to the bench for the knockout stages — a decision that felt seismic given his status as Portugal’s greatest ever player. Portugal reached the quarter-finals before losing to Morocco, and Ronaldo’s international career entered its twilight. The authentic version of this shirt, produced to match specification, is already climbing in collector value — it captures Ronaldo’s final major World Cup in a Portugal shirt.

The transition to Bruno Fernandes leading the side has been smooth. Portugal reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2024, losing to France — but the squad’s quality, with Vitinha, Leão, Pedro Neto and Gonçalo Ramos supporting Bruno and a veteran Ronaldo, makes them genuine contenders heading into the 2026 World Cup. The new generation is ready; the question is whether 2026 can finally deliver Portugal’s first World Cup.

Portugal retro football shirts — a buyer’s guide

Portugal retro football shirts have become one of the most actively collected international shirt markets in Europe. The combination of the 2016 European Championship victory — Portugal’s first and only major trophy — the Ronaldo era spanning two decades, and the Figo generation of the early 2000s creates a three-layered collecting market with something for every type of collector. Classic Football Shirts hold one of the most comprehensive Portugal catalogues available in the UK.

What are the most valuable Portugal shirts?

The most valuable Portugal shirts are consistently from the 2016 Euro-winning cycle — the 2016-18 home shirt with Ronaldo #7 is the standout, with authentic and player-version examples commanding the highest prices. From the 2000s era, the Figo #7 player issue shirt from 2002-04 is the most prized pre-Ronaldo piece. 1990s shirts are so rare that any example in reasonable condition commands collector premiums simply through scarcity.

Ronaldo vs Figo — which Portugal shirts are most collectible?

Both generations produce highly sought-after shirts but for different reasons. Figo-era shirts (2000-2006) are rarer and often produced to higher match or player issue specifications — the 2002-04 Figo #7 player issue is arguably the finest piece of Portuguese football memorabilia from any era. Ronaldo shirts cover a longer span (2006-present) with more volume available, but the 2016 winners shirt with Ronaldo #7 transcends both eras as the most significant Portuguese shirt in history.

Portugal shirts for the World Cup 2026

Portugal enter the 2026 World Cup as genuine contenders for the first time since 2006. Under Roberto Martínez, with Bruno Fernandes captaining a squad featuring Leão, Vitinha, Gonçalo Ramos and Pedro Neto, Portugal have the quality to go deep. Ronaldo is likely to make a final World Cup appearance. The new 2026-27 shirt is already available — and if Portugal finally win their first World Cup, this becomes one of the most significant shirts in football history overnight.
