Club History
1905 – 1969
Foundation, survival and a first title

Chelsea Football Club was founded in 1905 by businessman Gus Mears, who had acquired Stamford Bridge athletics ground and needed a club to fill it. Unlike most English clubs, Chelsea were created for their stadium rather than the other way around. The club was elected to the Football League in their first season and quickly established themselves in the top flight, though silverware proved elusive for decades.

The club’s first major honour finally arrived in 1955 when Ted Drake’s Chelsea won the First Division title, their only league championship before the Abramovich era. A FA Cup followed in 1970 under Dave Sexton, won in a replay against Leeds United at Old Trafford, marking Chelsea as a genuine force in English football for the first time.

1994 – 2003
Gullit, Vialli and the continental revolution

Glenn Hoddle’s arrival as player-manager in 1993 began Chelsea’s transformation into a cosmopolitan club. The signings of Ruud Gullit and Mark Hughes in 1995 changed the culture at Stamford Bridge, and Gullit’s appointment as player-manager in 1996 accelerated the process. Gianluca Vialli, Gianfranco Zola, Roberto Di Matteo and Marcel Desailly followed, turning Chelsea into one of the most star-studded clubs in Europe.

FA Cup wins in 1997 and 2000, a League Cup in 1998 and a Cup Winners’ Cup in 1998 delivered genuine silverware during this period. Zola in particular became one of the most beloved players in Chelsea’s history, a magician in blue who could change a game in an instant.

2003 – 2012
Abramovich, Mourinho and the Premier League takeover

Roman Abramovich’s takeover in June 2003 transformed Chelsea into a financial superpower overnight. Jose Mourinho arrived from Porto in 2004, declaring himself “the Special One,” and delivered back-to-back Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006 with a points record that stood for years. The Blues were playing some of the most ruthlessly effective football in Europe, marshalled by John Terry, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba.

After Mourinho’s departure in 2007, Chelsea continued to challenge under Avram Grant, Luiz Felipe Scolari, Guus Hiddink and Carlo Ancelotti, who delivered a Premier League and FA Cup double in 2010. The period produced some of the finest players to represent the club: Petr Cech, Ashley Cole, Michael Essien and Nicolas Anelka all wore the blue of Chelsea during this remarkable decade.

2012 – 2022
Champions of Europe: twice

Chelsea’s greatest night came on 19 May 2012 in Munich, when Roberto Di Matteo’s side came from behind to beat Bayern Munich on penalties in the Champions League final. Didier Drogba headed an equaliser in the 88th minute and then scored the winning penalty. It was the most dramatic final in the competition’s history and delivered Chelsea the one trophy that had eluded them.

Further Premier League titles came under Mourinho again in 2015, Antonio Conte in 2017 and then Thomas Tuchel delivered a second Champions League in 2021, beating Manchester City 1-0 in Porto with a Mason Mount assist and Kai Havertz finish. Two Champions Leagues in a decade cemented Chelsea’s status as one of the elite clubs in world football.

New ownership, new project

Todd Boehly’s consortium completed their takeover from Abramovich in May 2022, triggering one of the most extraordinary spending sprees in football history. Over 30 players arrived in just two transfer windows as Chelsea attempted to rebuild. The results on the pitch have been mixed, but under Enzo Maresca from 2024 there are signs of a coherent footballing identity emerging, built around Cole Palmer, one of the most gifted young players in European football.
