The USMNT kit history

American soccer has come a long way in a short time. In 1990, the USA qualified for their first World Cup in 40 years. Four years later they hosted the tournament in front of the largest crowds the competition had ever seen. By 2002 they had reached the quarter-finals, beating Portugal and Mexico along the way. Today, Christian Pulisic is one of the most recognisable players in world football and the USMNT are co-hosting the biggest World Cup in history on home soil.

The shirts worn through this rise are among the most distinctive and characterful in international football. Nobody does kit design quite like the USA. The 1994 home shirt with its denim-inspired pattern is one of the most talked-about World Cup kits ever produced. The 2006 away shirts pushed boundaries further. The current generation, led by Pulisic, wear shirts that carry the weight of a sport that has grown from niche to genuinely mainstream in American culture. With 2026 coming, that journey accelerates.

This guide covers every era of USMNT shirts from the 1990s through to the present day, with the history behind each kit, the players who wore them and where to find original and replica versions.

1992-94 USA match issue home shirt
1990s — World Cup hosts and the denim shirt that shocked the world
USA 94, the most iconic American football shirt ever made and a nation discovering the game

The 1992-94 USA match issue home shirt is one of the great conversation pieces in world football kit history. While most nations in this era were wearing relatively conservative designs, the USA arrived at their own World Cup in a shirt that looked like it had been cut from a pair of jeans. The denim-inspired pattern, bold and unapologetic, became one of the defining images of the 1994 tournament. You either loved it or hated it. Most people who were there loved it.

The 1994 World Cup itself was a watershed moment for American soccer. Crowds of over 68,000 at the Rose Bowl, 94,000 at the Michigan Stadium and packed venues across the country showed that a football audience existed in the USA, it just needed the right occasion to emerge. The USMNT reached the round of 16 before losing to eventual winners Brazil. Alexi Lalas, with his flowing red hair and beard, became a folk hero. The shirt worn by those players, in that tournament, in front of those crowds, carries a significance in the history of American sport that goes beyond football.

Match issue versions of the 1992-94 home shirt are rare. Only six 1990s USA shirts are currently available on Classic Football Shirts, making this the most limited era in the American catalogue. The combination of scarcity and the cultural significance of the 1994 World Cup makes these shirts genuinely important collector’s pieces.

2004-06 USA player issue away shirt Donovan 21
2000s — Donovan’s era and the 2002 quarter-final run
Korea 2002, beating Portugal and Mexico, and Landon Donovan becoming America’s first football hero

The 2000s were the decade American soccer genuinely arrived on the world stage. At the 2002 World Cup in Korea and Japan, the USA produced one of the great tournament upsets, beating Portugal 3-2 in the group stage before defeating Mexico 2-0 in the round of 16 to reach the quarter-finals. They were eventually beaten by Germany, but the run announced the USMNT as a team that could compete with anyone on their day.

Landon Donovan was the defining American player of this era. The 2004-06 player issue away shirt with Donovan #21 is the standout shirt of the decade. Donovan was arguably the best American footballer of his generation, the player who made his compatriots believe the sport could produce genuine world-class talent. Player issue quality adds technical significance to an already historically important shirt. The away design of this era, with its bold red colourway, is one of the USA’s most distinctive kits.

The 2006 World Cup in Germany brought a more difficult campaign. The USA were eliminated in the group stage after drawing with Italy and losing to the Czech Republic and Ghana. The shirts from this period, worn during the qualification campaigns and in Germany, are increasingly collectible as the 2000s generation recedes into football history.

2010-11 USA home shirt Altidore 17
2010s — Donovan’s last-minute Algeria winner and a golden moment
South Africa 2010, the Algeria goal heard round the world, and the Klinsmann generation

The 2010-11 USA home shirt with Altidore #17 is the shirt of one of the great World Cup moments in American sport. At the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the USA faced Algeria needing a win to progress from the group stage. In the 91st minute, Donovan scored. The reaction from American fans watching across the country became a viral phenomenon before viral phenomenons were fully understood. The country stopped. Sports bars that had never shown football erupted. The shirt worn that day captures the moment American soccer crossed a cultural threshold it has never fully retreated from.

The USA reached the round of 16 before losing to Ghana, but the tournament had done its work. Altidore, Dempsey, Bradley and Donovan had created memories that a generation of American sports fans would carry. Jürgen Klinsmann took over as manager in 2011, bringing a German-influenced approach that polarised opinion but produced a US team that qualified comfortably for Brazil 2014 and reached the round of 16 again, this time losing to Belgium after a memorable Tim Howard performance that became a meme in its own right.

The shirts from the 2010s are the best-stocked USA era on Classic Football Shirts, with 39 products available. They document the peak of the Donovan generation and the Dempsey era, and are now solidly in retro territory as the Pulisic generation takes over.

2022-23 USA away shirt Pulisic
2020s — Pulisic’s generation and hosting 2026
Qatar 2022, the Pulisic penalty and a nation ready to host the world again

The 2022-23 USA away shirt with Pulisic is the shirt of American soccer’s current moment. At the Qatar 2022 World Cup, Pulisic scored the goal against Iran that sent the USA through to the round of 16, injuring himself in the process. He played on. The image of him being stretchered off after scoring, then returning to the bench, then eventually playing again as the USA beat Iran became one of the most discussed American soccer images in years. The away shirt he wore that day is the defining shirt of his generation.

The USA reached the round of 16 in Qatar before losing to the Netherlands. The squad, with an average age of under 25, was clearly building toward something bigger. Dest, McKennie, Adams, Weah and Gio Reyna supporting Pulisic gave the team a depth of genuine talent that had never existed before in American soccer. The 2026 World Cup arrives as the USA are co-hosts alongside Canada and Mexico, with the strongest American squad in history and 48 teams competing in a format that offers more routes to the knockout stages than ever before. The shirt worn at the opening match could become one of the great American sports shirts.

USA retro football shirts, a buyer’s guide

USA retro football shirts occupy a unique place in the international kit market. The combination of the iconic 1994 World Cup denim home shirt, Donovan’s Algeria moment in 2010 and Pulisic’s growing global profile creates a collecting market that is genuinely growing as American soccer’s prominence increases. Classic Football Shirts stock over 70 USMNT shirts across four decades.

What are the most valuable USA shirts?

The most valuable USMNT shirts are consistently the 1992-94 home shirt from the 1994 World Cup in any form, with match issue versions the rarest of all. Player issue shirts featuring Donovan are the standout 2000s pieces. From the modern era, Pulisic versions of the Qatar 2022 shirts are already trading at collector prices. The 1994 denim shirt in any condition commands premiums simply due to its cultural significance and the scarcity of surviving originals.

The USA as 2026 World Cup hosts

The USA co-hosts the 2026 World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico, with matches across 11 American cities including New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, Miami and Seattle. Playing at home, with the strongest squad in USMNT history, in front of crowds that will include millions of American fans watching their team in a World Cup for the first time, the 2026 shirt will be one of the most significant USA kits ever produced. The new shirt has not yet been confirmed on Classic Football Shirts but we will update this page as soon as it becomes available.

Why are USA shirts collecting so much interest now?

Three factors: Pulisic’s growing profile as one of the recognisable names in world football, the 2026 World Cup coming to the USA and the growing interest in the sport among American sports fans. The USMNT shirt market has grown significantly since Qatar 2022 and will grow further as 2026 approaches. Buying now, before tournament demand arrives, remains the smart approach for collectors and fans alike.
